Christian Blondeau’s Professional Journey and Background
Funding Director of France At Leisure
Christian Blondeau is a French-born travel specialist and the founder of France At Leisure, established in 2002. Under his leadership, the company has become a leading specialist in travel to France for discerning Australian travellers.
With an exclusive focus on France, Christian brings an intimate knowledge of the country, its regions, culture, gastronomy, heritage and way of life. His expertise and personal connections allow him to curate exceptional, tailor-made journeys that reveal the very best of France.
For more than two decades, Christian has been dedicated to sharing his passion for his homeland, creating distinctive French experiences for Australian travellers who seek authenticity, elegance and a deeper connection with France.
Today, France At Leisure has more than 24 years of experience designing travel experiences in France. Its programs encompass tailor-made holidays, private experiences, small-group tours, regional journeys, French car-leasing programs, canal and river cruises, Rugby World Cups, château stays, gastronomy and wine experiences, and ANZAC battlefield tours.
Early Life and French Background
Born and raised in south-west France near Biarritz, Christian Blondeau developed his familiarity with French culture, cuisine, hospitality and regional traditions from an early age. His professional career began in hospitality at approximately 21, leading to two decades in the international hotel industry.
During this period, he worked in various five-star properties and held Food & Beverage management positions with international hotel groups including Hilton, Inter-Continental and Sheraton, as well as Beaufort. His career took him across France, the United Kingdom and Greece, providing him with extensive experience in international hospitality and service.
Christian Blondeau later moved to the Brisbane Sheraton, then was part of the opening team of the Heritage Hotel, now the Stamford. What was initially expected to be a relatively short stay became a permanent move, allowing him to combine his French heritage and hospitality background with his knowledge of the Australian market.
From Hospitality to French Travel
In 2002, Blondeau established France At Leisure with a deliberately focused approach: rather than operating as a generalist travel agency covering destinations around the world, the business would concentrate on one country and develop an exceptional depth of knowledge about it.
The company grew rapidly, reaching a team of 10 within its first three years. One of its early milestones came with the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, when France At Leisure became an official agent and sold Rugby packages to over 850 rugby fans.
Over the following years, the business evolved into a specialist French travel operation serving hundreds of Australian travellers. Its expertise spans both well-known destinations and lesser-explored parts of the country, with an emphasis on first-hand knowledge, local relationships and experiences that extend beyond conventional tourist itineraries.
A further major undertaking came with the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. France At Leisure organised a dedicated program for more than 450 rugby fans travelling around the country throughout the championship. As part of the experience, the company chartered a Uniworld river cruise from Avignon to Lyon, combining the Rhône Valley cruise with Rugby World Cup matches at either end of the journey. The result was a bespoke travel experience bringing together international sport, French culture, regional exploration and luxury river cruising.
Expertise and Approach
Blondeau's approach is rooted in the belief that meaningful travel comes from knowing a destination well. His background gives him a distinctive combination of French cultural knowledge, international hospitality experience and an understanding of what Australian travellers want from a holiday in France.
His expertise encompasses Paris and the French regions, boutique and luxury accommodation, château stays, French gastronomy and wine, canal and river cruising, self-drive travel, car leasing, active holidays, small group guided tours in all regions of France. He also has particular experience developing specialist travel programs around major sporting events and Australian military heritage.
France At Leisure's current business model reflects this specialist philosophy, supported by a network of French-based professionals and local partners throughout the country. Rather than simply providing standardised travel packages, the company focuses on creating personalised experiences based on the interests, expectations and travel style of each client.
