2019 ANZAC - 5 day tour - From Lille


The Australian War Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux commemorates the battle on the 24th/25th April 1918, when Australian and Commonwealth Soldiers liberated the town. 
In front of it lie the graves of over 770 Australian soldiers, as well as those of other Commonwealth soldiers and since 2008 it has been the site of the special ANZAC Day dawn service. Experience this unique event on our five-day ANZAC tour departing in April 2019 and join fellow countrymen and local townspeople to remember those

ITINERARY

Day 1 LILLE

Arrive in Lille and meet with the group in the evening for an included dinner. (D)

Day 2 LILLE – YPRES

Our first day takes us to Ypres via the Messines Ridge and the city itself. After lunch, we will spend time around the Passchendaele battlefields, including Polygon Wood, the Gravenstafel Ridge and Tyne Cot Military Cemetery. We’ll also visit the shell scarred area of Hill 60, before returning to Ypres. The final part of the day includes attendance at the daily playing of the Last Post under the Menin Gate at 8.00 pm. Day 3 YPRES – AMIENS

Leaving Belgium, we cross into French Flanders and spend time at Fromelles, focusing on the disastrous attack of 19th July 1916, including a visit to Pheasant Wood Cemetery and the new exhibition nearby. Our next encounter includes a  visit to the Wellington Quarries, fashioned from existing medieval quarries by New Zealand Engineers in 1916/17 as part of the preparations for the Battle of Arras. Australia’s role in this battle is remembered at Bullecourt, with a stop in the village at the Digger Memorial. (B)

Day 4 AMIENS – THE SOMME – AMIENS

The Somme still captivates the soul and it is here that the ANZAC’s first saw major action in the middle of 1916. Engrained upon their very being were the names of Pozières and Mouquet Farm for Australians, and Longueval and Flers for the Kiwis. We’ll also remember the colossal loss experienced by Great Britain with a visit to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, before reminiscing on our tour at our farewell dinner. (B,D)

Day 5 AMIENS – VILLERS-BRETONNEUX – LILLE

Villers-Bretonneux is central to Australian commemoration and memory, being the location of the National War Memorial. The final day focuses primarily on the final year of the war, 1918, with success at Le Hamel, which we will visit before we begin the journey back to Lille. (B)

DAY 2 LILLE – YPRES

The service will be an unforgettable and emotive experience, which we’ll share with the locals and fellow Australians and New Zealanders who have journeyed here to pay tribute to the brave ANZAC soldiers who fought for the town. The rest of the day will be yours to spend at your leisure before we meet for an included dinner this evening. (B,D)

Trace the events that left a mark on the 20th century – and on France’s northern fringes, and see the places you’ve read about in history books, setting the scene for an unforgettable experience. 

About the D-Day 75th Anniversary tour: 

The 6th June 2019 will witness the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, one of the turning points of the Second World War. By nightfall more than 150,000 Allied soldiers had been successfully landed and it marked the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany and the first step in the road to Victory in the West. Due to several major events in the region, hotel space is limited in the main Normandy area, but we are pleased to offer this tour which will stay in Lower Normandy or Brittany and attend the D-Day 75 Ceremony at Bayeux, and also visit some British and Commonwealth sites. Due to anticipated security, unfortunately it will not be possible to visit American beaches during D-Day 75.

• Two nights in southern Normandy or Brittany at a minimum 3-star hotel Ibis Pontorson Baie du Mont St. Michel or similar.  
• Your first and last night will be in northern France in city style hotels.

DAILY ITINERARY 
  • Day 1 - Local departure by coach, then to our hotel in northern France for an overnight stay.
  • Day 2 - British D-Day - We depart this morning for Normandy. We look at the British Airborne story on D-Day seeing where the landing and drop zones were located, visit Ranville War Cemetery and the Pegasus Bridge area. We then proceed to our hotel in Lower Normandy or Brittany for two nights. Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner 
  • Day 3 - D-Day 75th Anniversaries -  We depart early today for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, and attend the main British commemoration at Bayeux War Cemetery. Later we visit some D-Day sites in the British beaches area, Gold, Juno and Sword, depending on security arrangements and other events. Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner 
  • Day 4 - Beyond D-Day -  Today we look at the battle beyond D-Day, visiting some inland areas including Villers-Bocage and Hill 112. We then travel through the Bocage into Arromanches for lunch and time to see the Mulberry Harbour before heading to our overnight hotel in northern France. Included meals: Breakfast 
  • Day 5 - Transfer to London or staying in France.
